A while back, I wrote about the Sands Theater Company production of “Sweeney Todd” using notable locals as victims. Here are some of those who fell under the barber’s knife in the musical at DeLand’s Athens Theatre:

  • Michael Fronk, University Chaplain – Stetson University
  • Peter Matulis, VP – Brown & Brown of Florida Inc.
  • Hari Pulapaka, Executive Chef and Co-Owner – Cress Restaurant
  • Bob Apgar, Mayor – City of DeLand
  • Leslie “Gus” Gibbs, Owner – Gus Gibbs Clothing and Collectibles
  • Phil Martin, Owner – Mainstreet Grill and City Commissioner
  • Steve Farmer, Sr. VP – Brown & Brown of Florida Inc.
  • Rick Tonyan, Writer and Columnist
  • Mac Steen DDS, Steen Orthodontics

If you so desire, after the show you can get your picture taken with Sweeney … and his razor.

Meanwhile, patrons get a chance to save some money at mealtime with a “Sweeney Todd” ticket. (I’m assuming no one will have an appetite for meat pies.)

Under the “Athens Meal Deal,” patrons who show their Sweeney Todd ticket at several downtown restaurants will get a special treat, including things such as a free ice cream scoop or a free glass of wine with dinner. Offers are good before or after the show; just show your ticket. Go to www.athenstheatre.org for a full list of the restaurants and details of their offer.

This is the final weekend for the show. Performances are 7:30 tonight and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday. To get details on the show, click here: Sands Theater presents Sweeney Todd.
